Today, Lamb Weston / Meijer - manufacturer of deep frozen potato products - published its online sustainability report for 2010 and 2011.
The company aspires leadership in three sustainability themes: water, energy and potato.
The report illustrates the fact that Lamb Weston / Meijer does not limit itself to ambitions. For instance, the company already achieved its „zero waste to landfill‟ objective - less than 0.5% is now actual waste. Lamb Weston / Meijer is now leading the sector in this theme. The company is also following their roadmap in other areas, for instance by already using 4.8% less water per tonne of finished product, equalling 36 Olympic-size swimming pools. Since 2008, it also reduced its direct energy usage by 10.9% and its total carbon footprint by 6.9%. Additionally, several initiatives have been set up, such as the cultivation of algae in the purification of process wastewater and Lamb Weston / Meijer‟s own biogas production from residual substances.
Bas Alblas, Managing Director of Lamb Weston / Meijer
Bas Alblas, Managing Director of Lamb Weston / Meijer: “Our sustainability approach focuses on six specific areas which are most closely related to our core activities. These are Water, Energy & Emissions, Potato & Waste, Employees, Food Safety & Quality and Nutrition & Health. We refer to these six themes as the „Sustainable Six‟. For each theme we have set ambitious objectives through
2020, like a 50% reduction in direct water usage per tonne of finished product, and a 30% reduction in direct energy usage per tonne of finished product. For our main raw material, potatoes, we will increase the potato utilization by10% per tonne of finished product. Additionally we have an almost complete reuse of our by-products and residual streams into other useful destinations. We also want to stimulate a more conscious consumption.”
Creating Shared Value
Alblas continues: “Our vision is to create shared value in everything we do. This is essential to
maintain long-term relevance and to stay successful as a company. This is why we collaborate with a
variety of stakeholders in several ways. This includes consumers and customers, employees, growers
and other suppliers, and our shareholders. We consider sustainable thinking and acting to be
important building blocks of our business strategy.”
