This week there was a lot of news related to the environment. Much of this news is coming from the United Kingdom.

Nine more companies, including Cadbury and Coca Cola are signing up for the carbon trust label. This label, that was first used by Walkers on a bag of chips, indicates the carbon footprint of the production of that package including growing the potatoes and all transportation. ABC has in good video on this subject on their website.

Rubbish from 11 McDonalds restaurants will be used to power hospitals and theatres in the UK. The energy produced will provide heating for 130 buildings and save landfills from 100 tonnes of refuse per restaurant each year. The restaurants will also trial a range of environmentally friendly technologies and processes, including solar panels, wind power, energy-efficient lighting and a recycling scheme for cardboard.
It is clear that the United Kingdom is leading in this respect. However, the topic is gaining traction in North America as well:

Kettle Foods
opened their second north American production facility in Beloit. Yesterday
this factory was awarded the LEED® Gold Certification for Sustainable Design, and therefore can call themselves the "greenest food manufacturing facility in the US".
Some of the Beloit Kettle Foods factory features:
- 18 wind turbines are installed on the factory's roof, which will generate enough energy to produce 56,000 bags of potato chips each year
- 1.65 million gallons of potato wash water will be filtered and reused
- Premium, high efficiency equipment is installed to reduce the use of natural gas and electricity
