Dear Subscriber,
On
October
18, world food day, the United Nations officially launched the
International Year of the Potato 2008. Although there is a
strong focus on the role of potato as a staple food for
developing countries, I feel this is also a unique
opportunity for the potato industry to stress the
nutritional value and the versatility of the potato in all
its forms. McCain Foods Limited must agree, since the
company
announced its sponsorship of the United Nations
International year of the Potato at the official launch
in New York.
If the number of conferences that will
be organized next year is any indication of the success
of the International Year of the potato, the IYP2008 could
become a quite successful. We will update them on a regular
basis in our
Events section.
Speaking of events: three weeks ago the PotatoPro newsletter focused on
organic potato and potato products.
I wanted to let you know that
October 30 a (free) webinar takes place entitled "The Keys
to Organic Food Certification and Production". In general,
not specific on potato.
I also associate the International Year of the Potato
with the origin of the potato, the Peruvian highlands. The
Peruvian native potato recently received positive attention
when the project Tika'papa
"the potato goldmine" was awarded one of the 12 spots in
the finals of the BBC competition World Challenge. The
winning project receives a contribution of USD 20.000. In
case you did not yet vote,
you can still vote here (not anymore. T'ikapapa won!) The winning project will be
announced on December 10, 2007.

The international year of the potato 2008 seems to
trigger an impressive line-up of
conferences and exhibitions related to the potato. We
have updated our lists of events . Let us know if you have
more details on any particular conference in the event list,
or a conference that we have not yet listed. Many conference
programs are still sketchy at best. As more details become
available on the program of these conferences we will
highlight conferences and exhibitions in this section that
are of particular interest from a processing point of view.

If
you want to stay up to date on what is happening in the
potato industry in China, I can recommend a recent GAIN
publication
Potato and Frozen Potato Products in China 2007. Also
topics like the potato starch industry and the Foodservice
Industry are briefly addressed. Recently also an
overview of the Russian Potato market was published.
These GAIN reports are written by a department of the United
States Department of Agricultural (USDA). Consequently these
reports focus on the trade relation of these countries with the US.
