Dear Subscriber,
Last week the first
Indian Potato Expo was held in Kolkata. Although I was
unable to attend the event myself, I can update you on the
event thanks to a contribution from Parag Jhaveri. As
director of the
Stratafoam division of Belami Fine chemicals
Pvt. Ltd., he is well aware of the developments in the Indian
potato processing sector since his company is the leading
supplier of foam control agents to this Industry.
These were his
observations:
- India is one among Top 5 largest potato cultivating
countries in the world. However, due to infrastructure
bottlenecks such as fewer cold storage/transportation
facilities for preservation of potatoes, lack of
proportionate number of potato processors to consume the
abundant supply of potatoes locally, the industry has
not managed to take-off the way it should have. There
was a unanimous call for welcoming new enterprises in
potato processing.
- The government of India just recently started
exports of potatoes to Western world. Various speakers
urged the government to increase the allocation of
potatoes for exports.
- More and more farmers cultivating other crops are
now moving over to potato cultivation as the economics
/yields are more lucrative.
- Speakers from companies such as Frito Lay and McCain
Foods India were also indicating that their companies
were very keen on working closely with farmers to
jointly develop potato varieties that are suitable for
potato chips and fries. These 2 companies have already
added a lot of value to Indian potato farming by having
brought in specialized potato seeds from overseas and
supplying to farmers so that they can improve the potato
crop quality and fetch better yields by selling the crop
back to these companies for processing, thus creating a
win-win situation for everyone.
- In India, the northern state of Punjab remains the
sole pioneer in developing potato seeds suitable for
specialized processing needs of chips and frozen fries
manufacturers. The Central Potato Research Institute in
Jalandhar City, Punjab has been fairly active in potato
seeds research and has seen a lot of positive response
from some farmers to jointly develop improved seed
varieties. A veteran farmer from Punjab - Mr. Hardev
Singh Sangha was honoured for his contributions to
potato farming, with a Life-Time Achievement award at
the hands of the Chief Minister of West Bengal, - Mr.
Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee who thereafter urged his
colleagues and farmers of West Bengal to allocate
resources to develop potato seeds so as to be
self-dependant in this area.
It was proposed to organize this event every other year,
so in case you missed the event this year, you will have
another opportunity January 9-12 2010! If the Indian potato
(processing) industry interests you, you may want to
check out this newsletter as well.
