Dear Subscriber,
Every day we go through a large number of publications
related to the potato and potato products. Hence, we see the
good and the bad of what is written on this topic. Then we
pick out the interesting bits and pieces that we present
here on PotatoPro.
However, sometimes we come across publications that we do
not know what to make of. How about this title:
"World's first potato that peels itself", published on
April 2, in Marie-Claire, a major women's lifestyle magazine
in the United Kingdom. Sure sounds like an April fools joke
to me. The fact that there wasn't any other trace of this
news in other magazines made me only more suspicious. But
the article started with:
"No, this isn't a left over April Fool's gag, but a
ground-breaking new variety of potato which can actually
peel itself."
And continued with:
There's no need to suffer the boring process of peeling
potatoes for your Sunday roast as this new potato
miraculously grows without a skin."
So did biotechnologists really do the unthinkable in
making the potato more convenient?

A little digging revealed the truth behind the story: the
Marie-Claire journalists fell for an April fools joke
themselves! The original story was carefully crafted by the
Complete Media Group as part of their publicity campaign for
the
Real Food Festival that will be held in London Earl's Court
from April 24 - 27, where "world's easiest to cook spud"
supposedly would have been launched. Compliments, you even
made PotatoPro.
But why peel a potato anyhow? Eating them with skin on is
healthier...
Enjoy reading,
Paul van Eijck
PS. Please let us know if you came across other potato
related April fools jokes.

Potato Harvester Mister
This versatile spray unit can be fitted to most potato
harvesters. It delivers a fine mist spray of water onto
potatoes as they are lifted from the ground.
Mist spraying in this way has been shown to reduce
bruising during the harvesting operation, particularly in
dry harvest conditions.
The water dampens both the potatoes and the rollers in
the harvester. This lubricates the passage of the potatoes
over the top of the rollers and helps to prevent the
potatoes being pinched and damaged by the rollers.
The frame of the Harvester Mister has been designed to be
fitted to the framework of most potato harvesters. The spray
boom can be positioned so that water can be directed in the
most effective way onto the potatoes and rollers.
As the quality of the potato crop becomes ever more
important, the Harvester Mister will help to maximise
return and minimise the risk of rejection.
