Dear Subscriber,
From May 29 to May 31 Europatat held a conference in Bern,
Switzerland with the theme "the potato of the future". The
two main topics of the conference were the effects
of climate change on potato cultivation and
different views on GMO and potato. If these
topics are of interest to you, the full presentations posted
on the
Europatat website offer a wealth of information (some
presentations may take a while to load):
Presentations on Climate change
After an introduction by meteorologist Mario Slongo on
"Climate changes in the alpine region", Piet Boonekamp
of the University of Wageningen elaborated on the
"Possible effects of climate changes on potato production
and diseases". His view is not at all a doomsday
scenario for potato cultivation: He foresees higher yields,
higher dry matter content and larger tubers. On the
downside, Boonekamp foresees more hollow hearts, secondary growth
and sugar ends and predicts that potato storage may be
harder if winter temperatures rise. He goes in detail on the
effects of climate change on various potato diseases. His
overall message: Adapt!
Sybil Anwander Phan-huy, head of Economic
Policy/Sustainability of the Swiss retail chain Coop,
discussed the
opportunities and issues of Carbon dioxide labeling of
(food) products from a retail perspective.
Presentations on GMO's
First of all Thorsten Stork of BASF presented
the potential benefits plant biotechnology can offer for the
potato industry. He focused on Amflora, the BASF starch
potato that contains only amylopectine starch. Another
benefit within reach using plant biotechnology is Phytophthora resistency. Stork stressed the importance of EU
approval and cooperation throughout the potato supply chain
to realize these benefits.Jacques Bourgois, director of
the Swiss farmers Union presented
the Farmers perspective on GMO. Franziska
Troesch-Schnyder, president of Swiss Consumers' Forum,
highlighted "GMO
form a consumers perspective"
