This week we posted an
article on the sales of French Fries in US restaurants,
recently published in the Nation's Restaurant News.
According to research of the NPD group, servings of French
Fries have been declining since 2006 and took a huge dive
Weak industry traffic - a result of the economic downturn
in the US - is a contributing factor, but other factors are
at play: French fries performance lagged behind industry
traffic for five consecutive quarters. In the first quarter
of 2008 the French Fries servings were down 7%, after
declining 1% a year earlier.

Factors linked to the decline:
- Restaurant traffic shifts away from lunch and dinner
time, the traditional strong day parts for french fries

fries in the year ending in February, compared to 80% a
- this trend is particularly strong for kids meals:
french fries served with kids meals were down 13% in the
quarter ending in February 2008, while kids meals
traffic was down only 6%. French fries are replaced by
more nutritious alternatives, such as apple slices.
McDonald's, good for the sale of nearly 3 billion french
fry servings each year, reports that it has seen increases
in french fry sales year over year, with servings only
recently going flat to negative, though not as much as the
CKE Restaurants (Hardee's and Carl Jr) is turning the
tide by upgrading their french fries: last
year Hardee's switched from a classic shoestring french fry
to a skin-on thick cut french fry. The result was so
successful that starting in July all Carl Jr. restaurants
will switch to the new thick cut skin-on french fries.
Another positive sound on the sales of (retail) french fries
comes from the United Kingdom from
McCain Foods (GB) turnover in 2007 increased to £196.4
million, an 7.8% increase compared to 2006. McCain Foods
refers to its rebranding and re-education campaign "It's all
good" as a major factor.
