To check how the market for potatoes and potato products is developing in the United Kingdom, I had a look at retail data as published by the Potato Council in the monthly Retail Reports. These reports contain sales value and volume in retail for potatoes and products gathered by market research company TNS. Data are presented as the total sales in the 52 weeks prior to the indicated date, so we are looking at averaged yearly values.
We took those sales data and plotted two and a half year for you (52 weeks prior to October 8, 2006 till May 17, 2009) to get a view at what is happening a bit more long term. Click on the graphs to see a larger version.
This week we focus on the various ways table potatoes are offered, next week we will focus on potato products
The data distinguishes pre-packed and loose potatoes and the categories "New", "Maincrop" and "Baking".

Most of the potatoes are now offered pre-packed (over 90%) with the volume of potatoes sold loose decreasing steadily (over the period analyzed: "New" -43 % "Maincrop" -37% "Baking" -21%). Nevertheless, overall the sales value of loose potatoes increased (Overall: +3%; "New" +2 % "Maincrop" -10% "Baking" +9%), due to the fact that the prices for loose potatoes went up dramatically: "New" +78% "Maincrop" +42% "Baking" +38 %. Prices of loose potatoes are now well above those of pre-packed potatoes. Is the old loose bulk potato becoming a new niche product?

Overall the market market for table potatoes sold in retail increased in this period both in value (+25%) and volume (+5%).
Only a small fraction (about 2%) of the potatoes sold in the United Kingdom are organic. For now, the economic downturn seems to have made an end to the growth of this market segment, with an ominous last datapoint in May 2009.
The fact that the UK Retail market for potatoes should be considered one of the leading potato markets in Europe, makes these data even more interesting.
Next week: processed potato products in the United Kingdom

Process Expo & Pack Expo, Las Vegas, October 5 - 7, 2009
Just finished my travel arrangements to visit the Process Expo and Pack Expo in Las Vegas. With over 1200 exhibiting companies, this should be an impressive event.
The incredible deals that are currently available for flights and hotels make this an event you don't have to miss if you deal with processing and packaging equipment. And Aeroglide kindly offered free access to the exhibition!
