Last week I visited the Process Expo and Pack Expo, co-located
at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
For years, these annual US trade shows for processing and packaging
equipment - organised by the
Food Processing Suppliers Association (FPSA) and
Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute (PMMI) - are
co-located with the venue alternating between Chicago's McCormick
Place and Las Vegas Convention Center. In many ways the combined
event resembles the tri-annual
Interpack in Germany (179.000 visitors), but the event is
not as large. Don't get me wrong, the event is in no way small.
In fact, the two days I spend on the exhibition turned out not
enough to visit all the manufacturers of processing and packaging
equipment I wanted to meet...
Given the economic situation, ahead of the show, there was
much concern about the number of visitors. But visitors and
exhibitors seem to bet on an economic recovery and turned out
in near record numbers:
the PMMI counted a total of 22,721 packaging and processing
professionals, making it the second-largest PACK EXPO Las Vegas
since PMMI launched the show in 1995. Combined with similar
sounds from the Anuga that just closed its doors today, this
offers a positive sign of the developments in the global food
industry.
All exhibitors I spoke - mainly on the Process Expo - were
positive about the show, many expressing that interest was well
beyond their expectations. Many mentioned also the contrast
with last year:
Last
year the Process Expo was held in the West Building of McCormick
Place - linked to the rest of the complex by just a sky bridge
- and though overall visitor counts for this traditionally larger
event in Chicago was 68.000, it was reportedly very quiet on
the Process Expo.
Actually, this likely contributed to the fact that last week's
Las Vegas event was the last time Process Expo and the Pack
Expo were combined, breaking with a long tradition.
Next year, FPSA's
Process Expo will team up with the IFT, in the
Process Expo/Food Expo July 18-20 McCormick Place.
Having visited the IFT twice, at first I had a bit of trouble
seeing the two shows together, since the two events attract
a distinctly different audience. Having said that, the combination
adds an “extra dimension” to both shows: a very extensive
and high quality conference program
to
the Process Expo and an equipment focus to the IFT, traditionally
more focused on food science and ingredients. The combined event
may even help bringing food science and food production closer
together.
Meanwhile,
the PMMI is planning an
expanded Pack Expo International (October 31 - November 3, McCormick
Place, Chicago) with for the first time processing solutions
included throughout the halls, the launch of the 50,000 net
square foot "PROCESSING Zone" and a confectionery Pavilion,
sponsored by the National Confectioners Association.
With both events soliciting manufacturers of Food Processing
Equipment the question they are confronted with: where to exhibit?
Not all exhibitors I spoke last week on the Process Expo
and Pack Expo were already fully aware of next years situation,
but several of them had already made up their mind.
And the answer is good news for both events.....
They plan to be present at BOTH events and will base future
decisions based on where their customers flock together.
I might visit both events as well!
