Earlier this month the United States Department of
Agriculture's Economical Research Service (USDA-ERS)
published a new tool that I wanted to share with you today:
the Food
Environment Atlas.
The Food Environment Atlas provides "a spatial overview of a
community's ability to access healthy food and its success
in doing so" for the United States.
The Food Environment Atlas brings together a series of maps
on a wide range of food and health related topics and
presents this wealth of data in a very intuitive way. You
can find information such as: food stores (access,
proximity, types of stores), restaurants, food prices, food
eaten at home, food assistance, physical activity, health
information and a range of socio-economic factors. The maps
are based on
a range of data sources, most fairly recent (exception:
per capita expenditure in restaurants is from Census 2002,
the most recent available 5 year Census data).
I selected a few of special interest to the potato industry
(click graphs for larger version):
The Food environment Atlas also provides a lot of insight on
relations: Comparing the different maps, it is pretty
obvious that there is a relation (geographical co-location)
between the occurrence of obesity, diabetes and
poverty/median income. No geographical overlap between fat
consumption and obesity - actually quite the contrary (!),
no obvious relation between the number of fast food
restaurants, fast food restaurants/1000 people , expenditure
in fast food restaurants and obesity or diabetes. On the
other hand, if I was a soft drink manufacturer this map
could make me somewhat uneasy, as poverty, obesity and
diabetes and high soft drink consumption show strong
geographical overlap. However, it should be stressed that
co-occurrence does not mean cause (does drinking soft drinks
make you poor?).
Left top: Obesity, Right top: Diabetes, Left bottom:
Poverty, Right bottom: Soft drinks/capita
The Food Environment Atlas seems to suffer from it's own
success as access during busy hours frequently resulted in
error messages (overloaded?). So if you try to access the
Food Environment Atlas and receive an error message, just
try again later.

Is someone is aware of similar data for other parts of the
world? If so, I would be interested to hear about it. And if
you live in the United States: don't forget to check out
your own "Food Environment" !
