Since last year's end-of-year
PotatoPro Newsletter about Food Trends
was a hit, we decided we would revisit the
topic. Who knows - maybe even turn it into
a yearly issue.

In fact, we want to step it up. We present
you not only a selection of the Food Trends
we found for 2011, but we also compare them
to last years predicted Food Trends and
conclude with a brief analysis on the quality
of last year's predictions.

Glancing over the 2010 predictions, the
first thing I noticed was that all trend
overviews were actually quite good! If I
would have to pick a 'winner', it would
be the 2010 prediction of Innova Market
Insights.
Simplicity (mentioned in many Food
Trend overviews;
related PotatoPro Newsletter), Sustainability,
changes in nutritional claims,
"Free from", Home Cooking,
Energy, Xtreme flavors:
this article could have been published today
and would not have raised any flags, well
maybe with the exception of a reference
to swine flu which today seems like a distant
memory.
Therefore, make sure you don't miss
Innova's predictions for 2011
If there was any trend missing in Innova's
2010 overview, it would be the importance
of today's "connectivity", through social
media and otherwise, a trend most clearly
expressed in
Phil Lempert's 2010 overview (power
of the collective). Another trend worth
mentioning for 2010 is the ongoing battle
between brands and private label mentioned
in a number of other lists (related
PotatoPro Newsletter).
So have a look at the 2011 food trends yourself
and make up your mind what it means for
your crop, product or service.
Enjoy reading,
Paul van Eijck
