GM Potato trial in Punjab causes controversy

March 01, 2011

A controversy on field trials/multiplication of GM potato at the Central Potato Research Station (CPRS), Jalandhar, has started with activists, farmers unions and medical experts demanding from the Punjab government for immediate ban on these.

Addressing a joint press conference here, leaders of Alliance for GM Free and Safe Food, Punjab, while terming the recent field trials of GM Potato at CPRS as "highly objectionable and illegal with gross violations of Environment Protection Act 1989 rules", demanded that Punjab government should assert its authority by disallowing such trials and communicate same to the centre.
