Profits have fallen by more than £10m at McCain Foods GB after Britain's market-leading frozen chip maker was hit by a severe shortage of quality potatoes in the UK as a direct result of the extreme weather conditions in the 2012 growing season.

Russia is a huge producer of potatoes and is the third largest potato producer in the world. In 2012, Russia produced 29.5 million metric tons of potatoes. Only 13% is produced by agricultural enterprises: 79% is produced by private households.
West Bengal Potato traders on 3-day strike

West Bengal state government today started selling potato at Rs 13 a kilo, a price pegged by chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, on a day potato traders in Bengal began a 3-day strike to protest the administration’s ban on selling the tuber to other states.
