At this time, with the transition from potatoes for storage to new potatoes, the sector's prospects are optimal. This week, the new potato harvest is starting in the early areas of Andalusia, Cartagena and Valencia. Medium or large volumes are expected, as well as high quality and good calibers.

Cosme Catalán, manager of Patatas Catalán:

“Thanks to the weather, there will be a good harvest. We've had a winter with practically no frost, little wind and moderate rainfall. The mild spring without phytosanitary issues is resulting in an optimal harvest.”

"We have started harvesting the fresh potatoes for the traditional market, and ten days later, as soon as the skin is firm, we will be able to supply large retailer packaging customers with potatoes for washing. By mid-May, processing potatoes will also be supplied."

"The shortage of potatoes in Europe has sparked both expectation and concern. This will ensure that the first stage of the new potato campaign is a good one. Later, it will all depend on the yields and productions from various regions."

"There is a growing demand, especially in times of shortage, due to reduced harvests this year in northern Europe, but the demand from the industry is on the rise, and it cannot do without a sufficient supply."

"This has led it to close contracts with good prices. It is a positive development that entails stability for the sector, companies and producers"

Patatas Catalán produces 65,000 tons per year in western Andalusia, Cartagena, Murcia, Castile-Leon and Galicia. The total production of the group exceeds the 150,000 tons. The storage warehouses present in the harvesting areas allow an efficient supply throughout the year. This family business has been able to adapt to changes.

The demand for organic potatoes for processing is also growing. The controlled production is carried out under contract and for specific clients. The most demanded variety is the Agria, although large specialized industries also go for the Hermes and the Lady Amarilla.
