马铃薯于1850年由居住在该国高山地区的欧洲人引入斯里兰卡。
目前马铃薯在该国努沃勒埃利耶（Nuwara Eliya）（山区湿润地带，平均海拔> 1000米）广泛种植， 种植季节主要为两季，2月 至7月种植Yala，8月至12月种植Maha，年降雨量> 2,500 mm，气温在10-15℃之间，相对湿度为80％。 马铃薯也广泛种植在巴杜勒（Badulla）（内地平均海拔为1000至1500米的地方），分别在Yala和Maha品种生长的季节，种植在稻田和高地。该地区每年降雨量为1500 - 2250 mm，相对湿度为占70％，气温在15-22℃之间。
Puttlam和Jaffna是另外两个马铃薯种植面积较少的地区。
因其高净收益，马铃薯是内地农民最受欢迎的作物。
