至少从19世纪中叶开始，马铃薯便开始在突尼斯得到种植，实际种植时间可能还要追溯到更久之前。有人认为，早在17世纪马铃薯就从西西里岛被引入突尼斯。
直到最近，马铃薯生产仅限于地中海沿岸的一些地区，大多来自外籍人士的消费需求主要通过进口来满足。
在1956年独立后，作物的受欢迎程度大大增加，政府鼓励扩大马铃薯生产，以减少从法国和意大利进口的马铃薯。
目前，超过2.5万公顷（相当于突尼斯耕地总面积的17％）的土地用于马铃薯种植。该作物是突尼斯仅次于西红柿的第二大作物。
