Las papas se establecieron en el Zimbabue contemporáneo a comienzos del Siglo Veinte. En 1911, se realizaron ensayos de variedades con producciones registradas de hasta 11.5 toneladas por hectárea (t/ha).

A lo largo de los años, la papa se ha vuelto uno de los cultivos más populares en Zimbabue con cada sector, desde agricultores pequeños hasta a gran escala, involucrándose en ello.

Esto ha sido impulsado por hábitos alimenticios que están cambiando gradualmente dado que el maíz ya no es alimento básico para muchos hogares urbanos.
