Agriculture Ministry approves 4 new ICAR-CPRI potato varieties—Kufri Ratan, Kufri Tejas, Kufri Chipbharat-1 & 2—for nationwide cultivation, boosting yields, processing quality & farmer returns, strengthening India’s potato sector.

As India prepares to overtake China as the world's largest potato producer, a homegrown startup is tackling one of the sector's most persistent challenges: the massive revenue losses caused by poor grading and sorting practices.

CPRI launched Kufri Chipbharat-1, a new potato variety for processing, marking a significant advancement in India's agricultural sector. The release, attended by key officials, supports India's position as the second-largest global potato producer.

India, now the world’s second-largest potato producer, is rapidly expanding its exports of frozen potato products, driven by innovation and strategic market positioning. With record-breaking production and ongoing research, the country aims to become the top global potato exporter by 2050.

The ICAR-Central Potato Research Institute organised a front-line demonstration programme showcasing improved potato varieties to empower local farmers and promote sustainable agricultural production.

The potato shortage in Odisha (India) has eased somewhat after the West Bengal government allowed the supply of potato to other states for a week. Experts suggest increasing local production by using HTPS seeds and improving storage facilities.

Developed by ICAR's Central Potato Research Institute, these new potato varieties aim to boost production, processing potential, and adaptability to warmer climates.
