The 2019 season for Greek potatoes was very good, but they are already getting ready for the new crop.

Whether the new season will be as good as the previous one is yet to be seen, as only certain markets are interested in the new crop potatoes.

For Greek fresh produce exporter Zafirakis Fruits the potato season in 2019 was satisfying.

Nasos Zafirakis, director of Zafirakis Fruits:

“The potato season of May 2019 started very good. We’ve seen nice quality and large yields when considering the volumes per hectare. Prices were also very good to us.”
Next up is the new crop of potatoes, which endured some issues due to the weather.

Nasos Zafirakis:

“The volumes are not so big, we’ve also seen some small quality problems caused by the weather. In November we’ve seen rain every single day.”

“Prices are also not great, as they’re only at 0.35 euro per kilogram.”

“Our expectations are that our big sizes will be exported to Bulgaria and Romania, with Poland receiving our smaller sizes. These markets are the most interested in new crop potatoes.”
