Variety Description

Belete (Solanum tuberosum L.) is an improved Ethiopian table potato variety released in 2009 by the Holetta Agricultural Research Center (HARC) of the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR). The variety was developed from CIP clone 393371.58, an advanced breeding line supplied by the International Potato Center (CIP), Peru. Belete was bred for Ethiopia's highland production systems and has become one of the country's most widely cultivated potato varieties due to its exceptional yield potential, adaptability, and excellent tuber quality.

Belete is recommended for cultivation at elevations of 1,600–2,800 metres above sea level and reaches maturity in approximately 101–110 days, making it an early-maturing variety. Under research conditions, it can produce yields of up to 47.2 tonnes per hectare, while farmers typically harvest 28.1–33.8 tonnes per hectare under normal management. The variety is well adapted to Ethiopia's rain-fed highlands and is valued for its stable performance across different environments.

The variety produces large, round tubers with cream-coloured flesh and a high dry matter content (25.4–25.55%), making it suitable for both fresh consumption and processing. Belete is resistant to late blight and Potato virus X (PVX) but is susceptible to Potato leaf roll virus (PLRV), Potato virus Y (PVY), and bacterial wilt. Its excellent cooking quality and suitability for producing chips (crisps) and French fries have contributed to its popularity among both smallholder and commercial growers in Ethiopia.
