Australian potato growers reject dietary claims

december 21, 2011

Proposed new dietary guidelines have drawn a mixed reaction from Australia's vegetable growers.

Released last week by the National Health and Medical Research Council, the draft guidelines recommend people eat "plenty of vegetables, including different types and colours"but also suggest adults consume 40 per cent less potatoes and children eat a third less.

While vegetable industry peak body AusVeg welcomes the message people should increase their vegetable intake, the group and potato growers are fuming that the potato has been blacklisted.
