Meijer Potato celebrates its 100th anniversary

september 23, 2020
In 1920 Kees (Cornelis) Meijer established his company. He traded in potatoes and onions. He built a better life for his family and himself. Kees turned out to be good with people, their passion and talent.

In the early years, the staff, together with the family, worked to build a company where trust in each other and the awareness of market demands were important.

Trust in potatoes

The company developed into an innovative player with a focus on potatoes. This focus is reflected in the motto of the Meijer family: 'We have trust in potatoes'.

Today, Meijer Potato is one of the world players in breeding and trading of high value potato varieties in 60 countries. In our organization the passion for potatoes is something tangible and infectious.

The potential that we see in the potato inspires us. We make use of this potential through breeding and marketing our varieties. This is our contribution and the way in which we get more people to enjoy food.

The yet to be exploited potential gives focus to our breeding programme and motivates further targeted international growth.

In the years ahead, we will focus on accelerating the introduction of new potato varieties. Renewal of varieties is inspired by worldwide trends such as population growth, welfare development, climate change, sustainability and natural changes in taste and diet. Innovation and technological development support this acceleration.

Erika den Daas, CEO:

“At Meijer Potato the passion for potatoes is tangible, but the best part of this company is its people. Everybody really matters.”

Celebrate

Besides the introduction of a new corporate identity, various events were also planned to celebrate the 100-year anniversary with staff, customers and seed potato growers we have worked together with over the last century.

Unfortunately, the global corona crisis forestalled our plans.

Once the crisis and associated measures are under control, Meijer Potato, will once again turn its attention to celebrating this milestone.
