The World Potato Congress Inc. (WPC Inc.) is pleased to host its upcoming webinar, “Crop Rotation for Wireworm Control,” on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at 8:00 AM EDT (USA/Toronto). This session will be presented by Dr. Christine Noronha, Research Scientist (Entomology IPM) at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.
Wireworm larvae are among the most challenging pests in potato production due to their hidden behavior, wide host range, and the limited availability of effective insecticides. Their impact can lead to significant yield losses and, in severe cases, complete crop failures. In response to these challenges, Dr. Noronha and her team conducted extensive research to evaluate rotation crops as a strategy for wireworm suppression. Their findings demonstrated a substantial reduction in heavily infested fields, confirming the value of crop rotation as a practical and effective management tool. These results, along with broader insights into wireworm behavior and integrated pest management, will be discussed in detail during the webinar.
About the Presenter
Dr. Christine Noronha is a leading Entomology IPM researcher at the Charlottetown Research and Development Centre, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, PEI. Her work focuses on developing innovative pest management solutions for key agricultural pests. She is the inventor of the NELT™, a solar-powered click beetle trap, and the developer of both an effective crop rotation strategy for wireworm control and the “Stem Crusher” technology for European corn borer management in potatoes.
Dr. Noronha’s contributions have earned her significant recognition, including the Agrologist Recognition Award from the PEI Institute of Agrologists (2016) and inclusion among the Influential Women in Canadian Agriculture (2022). She collaborates closely with growers, researchers, consultants, and industry groups across Canada, Europe, and the United States.
