Kenya Mpya is a high-yielding potato variety developed by the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) and released in 2016 in Kenya, specifically bred for use in table consumption, chips, and crisps. It is well adapted to all regions suitable for potato production in the country. This variety matures within a medium period of 3 to 4 months, producing yields of over 40 tons per hectare (approximately 14.16–18.21 tons per acre) under optimal conditions.
The tubers of Kenya Mpya are oval in shape with a smooth cream-colored skin, shallow pink eyes, and cream-colored flesh, making them visually appealing and suitable for various culinary uses. It has a high dry matter content of 23%, which is ideal for processing, and a long dormancy period of 2.5 to 3 months, allowing for extended storage and market flexibility.
The plant grows semi-erect and tall, reaching about 1 meter in height, with strong stems and medium-sized, light green leaves. Flowering is rare, but when it occurs, the flowers are white. Notably, Kenya Mpya demonstrates strong resistance to Late Blight and Potato Leaf Roll Virus (PLRV), two of the most economically damaging potato diseases, which contributes to reduced production losses and lower dependency on chemical control.
Seed for this variety is primarily produced by ADC-Molo and KALRO-Tigoni, ensuring quality and availability for farmers across suitable potato-growing regions.
