The idea was straightforward: develop a sweet potato variety that could be adapted across Canada so the country could grow more sweet potatoes rather than rely on imports.
The head of the Sidus group, Marcelo Argüelles, presented the biotechnological event flanked by the Secretaries of State Lino Barañao and Luis Miguel Etchevehere, of Science and Technology and Agro-industry, respectively.

ARS scientists streamline process to introduce multiple genes - as is required to make potatoes resistant to late blight
Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists in Albany, California, have found a way to streamline the process that scientists use to insert multiple genes into a crop plant. Simplot is planning to use it to introduce multiple genes into potatoes to make them resistant to late blight
Using gene editing technology such as CRISPR-Cas9, bruising and browning of potatoes can be reduced, eliminating some of the 3.6 billion lbs. of potato food waste each year.

Experimental potato delivers bounty of vitamin A and E
An experimental 'golden' potato has the potential to provide as much as 42 percent of a child’s recommended daily intake of vitamin A and 34 percent of a child’s recommended intake of vitamin E, according to a study co-led at The Ohio State University.
The enormous diversity of ancient / native potatoes can still be seen in countries like Peru, where many of these varieties are still grown.

Second Generation Innate® Potatoes Receive Approval in Canada
Health Canada and Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) have completed the food, feed, and environmental safety assessments of the J.R. Simplot Company’s second generation of Innate® potatoes. The authorizations enable the potatoes to be imported, planted, and sold in Canada.

After 15+ years of absence, genetically engineered potatoes will return to Canada
Since Monsanto took their genetically modified Newleaf /Naturemark potatoes of the market in 2001, no GM potatoes have been grown commercially in Canada. But Simplot's Innate potatoes are going to change that in 2017.
