Potatoes USA has sent the first shipment of U.S. seed potatoes to Cuba. The mixed load of 10 different varieties will be utilized in trials conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture in Cuba.

The rainfall in November, December, and January in the western and central parts of Cuba made it impossible for Cuban farmers to achieve a crop yield similar to the one they got last year, when they harvested 120,000 tons of potatoes.

The Cuban western province of Matanzas, one of the largest producers of potatoes in the country, will almost double potato yields during the present harvest, according to Agriculture officials.
