Potatoes in Zimbabwe are grown mainly in the Highveld and eastern highlands, where cooler temperatures favor tuber development. The eastern highlands, including the Nyanga area, are also important for potato research and seed production. Irrigation supports cultivation across multiple planting seasons.

Major potato varieties grown in Zimbabwe include Amethyst, Montclare, Jasper, Garnet, Diamond, BP1 and Pimpernel. Amethyst is known for its adaptation across different production regions, while Garnet and Pimpernel are used in potato processing, including crisp production.

Potatoes in Zimbabwe are planted during three main production windows: the summer season, generally beginning in November, the first winter season from February to April, and the second winter season from July to August. Summer planting is commonly rain-fed, while the winter crops rely more heavily on irrigation.

Potato cultivation in Zimbabwe dates back to at least the early 20th century, with variety trials recorded in 1911. A national potato breeding programme was established in 1956, supporting the development of locally adapted varieties and domestic seed production. The Crop Breeding Institute continues to maintain potato varieties and supply breeder seed for multiplication.
