Less early potatoes in Spain

april 09, 2010
In Spain this year 10.1 percent less early potatoes were planted than last year. Spain need to import more potatoes. According to the Spanish ministry for rural business 12,872 HA of early potatoes are being grown in Spain. That is 10.1 percent less because of the abundant rain. The area for very early potatoes has shrunk by
4.9 percent to 3,567 HA.
Due to the limited supply the price of the early potatoes in Spain at the end of March increased to almost 35 Euro/100kgs. farm gate on average, according to the ministry. Last year about this time it was almost 22 Euro. According to the Dutch Bureau for the Potato Market (BAI) less early potatoes are exported from Spain to the European market. "In Italy as well the cold and rain were the cause of a smaller crop."

This has a positive effect on the West European crop. The marketing commission in Goes quoted 7 to 8 Euro/100kgs. for export potatoes. That is 1 Euro more than three weeks ago.
