FAO celebrates the International Day of Potato 2025 on 30th May with a high-level event under the theme, “Shaping history, feeding the future.”
This marks the second observance of the International Day of Potato and coincides with the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The event will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. CEST, both at FAO Headquarters in Rome and online.
This year’s event once again highlights the potato – Solanum tuberosum (L.) – a widely consumed crop that plays an important role in many diets and farming systems around the world. From small farms in the Andes to large commercial operations across continents, potatoes support food security, nutrition, and livelihoods in both rural and urban communities.
This year’s celebration aims to:
- Reflect on the potato's enduring contribution to global food systems
- Highlight its role in sustaining small-scale farmers and feeding a growing population
- Examine challenges within the potato value chain
- And envision a more sustainable and inclusive future for this humble staple
Join for an engaging hour of insightful discussions, a live cooking demonstration, and a cultural dance performance in honor of this remarkable crop.
Let's come together to appreciate the global impact of potatoes on this significant day!
