Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU Munich) conducts potato-related research, with an emphasis on the genetic diversity and breeding potential of European potato cultivars.

Professor Korbinian Schneeberger's research team, in partnership with the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research, rebuilt the genomes of ten historic European potato types.

This study discovered that these ten cultivars account for nearly 85% of the genetic variety found in current European potatoes, implying a relatively small gene pool due to historical bottlenecks and disease pressures.
