A Herbert Engineering Student, Daniel Campling, is shortlisted for Young Designer of the Year at British Engineering Excellence Awards (BEEA).
Daniel Campling - a Harper Adams Graduate - recently completed a nine-month placement at Herbert Engineering gaining experience in all aspects of the engineering process from the Design Office through to production and assembly.
Daniel worked as part of a team of six in the main Production offices and was part of a 13 strong team of Designers in the Engineering department. During his placement, Daniel focused predominantly on the agricultural and fresh pack sectorsof the business for which Herbert design, manufacture, install and support a range of handling products and solutions for grading, washing, tipping, conveying, sorting and packing. Within the company, Daniel was well respected and according Rod Herbert, Company Chairman this recent shortlist for the British Engineering Excellence Awards 'Young Designer of the Year' is a well deserved acknowledgement of his work during his employment.
Rod Herbert comments, 'The future of British manufacturing relies on innovative, enthusiastic designers to engineer solutions to help our economy. Daniel's performance will be a benchmark to measure against for future Engineering graduates at Herbert's, as he was professional, practical, an excellent communicator and true ambassador for engineering.
Daniel's position required him to gather initial ideas and concepts from highly experienced engineers and produce in the first instance a basic 3D model of the relevant machine. He would then continue to refine the model after chairing a number of design review meetings which include representaion from the Management, Fabrication, Fitting and Sales departments.
Once the final design had been decided upon, Daniel would produce the technical drawings necessary for manufacture as well as compiling the 'Bill of materials' whilst all the time monitoring the cost of manufacture to ensure the required profitability of the machine. Daniel would liaise closely with the fabrication and fitting departments to ensure a smooth transition from design through to manufacture.
The list of machines that Daniel worked on include a Vegetable Hydro-cooler, Submerged Even-flow Hopper and Wet Reception Hopper.
The winners for this year's British Engineering Excellence Awards will be announced on 13 October. The awards demonstrate that engineering excellence creates world-class businesses and, most importantly, that engineering design innovation is a vital part of the UK's economy.
