Potato processor McCain has contracted Soltens to remove and recycle by-products from its Scarborough french fry factory.
The food producer, based in Eastfield, has agreed a five-year deal with Pontefract firm Soltens to take over sales of the products, which includes potato peel.
Once collected, they are destined for the animal feed industry and are sold on to farms via Soltens’ sister company Duynie, as a cost effective alternative to compound animal feeds.
Soltens, part of Europe’s largest by-product recycling firm, Dutch company Soltens BV, saw off stiff competition to secure the prestigious deal in a competitive tendering process.
The company handles more than four million tonnes of by-products a year across Europe, including one million tonnes of potato by-product, and replaces McCain’s incumbent contractor which has worked at the Scarborough factory for a number of years.
Jonathan Job, procurement manager at Soltens, described the contract as a “significant step forward in the UK” for the West Yorkshire firm, which took over from the existing contractor last Thursday.
