20th International Berlin Potato Evening highlights market pressure and value chain cooperation amid large 2025 harvest

Around 500 guests from 15 countries accepted the invitation of the German Potato Trade Association (DKHV) to attend the 20th International Berlin Potato Evening (IBK). Representatives from across the entire potato value chain, as well as science, associations and politics, gathered at the festively decorated TITANIC Chaussee Berlin to discuss current challenges, market conditions and the political framework affecting the sector.
Thomas Herkenrath, President of the German Potato Trade Association (DKHV):
"Trade carries responsibility for stability in the value chain, for directing surpluses and for ensuring secure marketing channels."
He also reflected on the development of the event, which began in 2005 with around 50 participants and has grown over two decades into one of the most important meeting points for the potato industry.
Large 2025 harvest shapes the market situation
The current market situation was the main focus of discussions. The 2025 potato season has been marked by an unusually large harvest. Expanded cultivation areas and favorable growing conditions have led to price pressure, high storage stocks and changing international trade structures across Europe. All major producing countries are facing similar challenges.
Herkenrath described the situation as part of a typical market cycle. After high prices in previous years, many farms increased production. The key now is to respond calmly and secure reliable marketing channels so that farming businesses can remain economically viable in the long term.
Competitiveness under pressure
Structural burdens on the sector were also highlighted. Rising production and logistics costs, comparatively high energy prices, bureaucracy and overregulation are significantly weakening the competitiveness of both the German and European potato industries.
Dialogue and unity as key priorities
Despite the challenging market environment, the DKHV president remained optimistic. Prudence, perseverance and, above all, unity across the value chain are essential. Farmers, traders, processors, logistics providers, associations and policymakers must work together responsibly to ensure stability.
With the establishment of the "Young DKHV," the association is also actively involving the next generation of potato trade professionals. Personal exchange, networking and direct dialogue remain indispensable for the future of the sector, despite increasing digitalization.
The 20th International Berlin Potato Evening once again confirmed its role as an important platform for dialogue, networking and international cooperation within the potato industry. DKHV thanked all participants, exhibitors, sponsors and the organizing team for their support.
