On May 30, the International Day of the Potato was celebrated worldwide for the third time, placing focus on a crop that represents far more than a staple food. The potato continued to play an important role in food security, economic development, sustainability and culinary diversity.

With a wide range of potato varieties cultivated globally and a self-sufficiency rate significantly above 100% in Germany, potatoes made an important contribution to food security while remaining a key component of the German and European agricultural and food economy.

German Minister of Agriculture Alois Rainer highlighted the importance of potatoes for food security and sustainable agriculture in a video message released for the occasion.

Potatoes as a cultural asset and diverse crop

Potatoes shaped food culture in Germany and across Europe for centuries, connecting regions and generations while representing exceptional varietal diversity. Whether waxy or floury, yellow-, red- or purple-fleshed, potatoes demonstrated the diversity of regional agriculture and consumer preferences.

From an agronomic perspective, potatoes also remained an important crop for the future. They contributed to diversified crop rotations and supported long-term soil health while offering comparatively efficient water use.

Karin Riemer, President of the German Federal Plant Variety Office:

"The German Federal Plant Variety Office approves approximately 8 to 12 new potato varieties every year. The diversity and varietal differences in potatoes are also reflected in practice, where different uses and processing characteristics are required."

Potatoes as an economic factor

The potato sector remained an important part of the agricultural value chain in Germany. From breeding and cultivation to storage, sorting, processing and marketing, the potato industry supported employment and value creation in rural regions.

The sector was also characterized by strong innovation and international competitiveness. Germany remained the largest and most important potato production region in Europe. Regionally produced and marketed potatoes supported domestic agriculture while contributing to resilient food systems and shorter supply chains.

In addition to food applications, potatoes were also used as a raw material in multiple industrial sectors. Potato starch was used in paper production, adhesives, pharmaceutical products and technical applications.

Potatoes as a modern culinary classic

Potatoes continued to combine tradition and modern food culture across generations. Whether served as a traditional side dish, used as a creative main ingredient or incorporated into modern plant-based diets, potatoes remained versatile and widely appreciated across consumer groups.

Their broad culinary versatility continued to position potatoes as an important component of both everyday meals and fine dining cuisine.

Industry representation

The International Day of the Potato highlighted the continued relevance of potatoes as an "all-time classic" with a strong future outlook.

Representing the potato sector in Germany, the German Potato Trade Association (DKHV) and the Union of the German Potato Industry (UNIKA) jointly supported the entire potato value chain, from breeding and production to trade, processing and marketing, while working to strengthen the future of the potato sector.
