波兰国王约翰三世索比斯基（John III Sobieski）在访问维也纳后，在17世纪中期把马铃薯引入到他的国家，马铃薯最初被称为amerykany (源自"美洲")。
之后，波兰因其对马铃薯的热爱而在20世纪成为马铃薯生产巨头之一。
到1970年，该国每年马铃薯收成超过5000万吨，当时仅次于苏联。
如今，波兰的马铃薯产量仍然排名世界前10位。 然而，近年来收成下降，从1990年的3600万吨下降到2000年的2420万吨，然后在2006年下降到不到900万吨的创纪录低点。2007年收成近1180万吨，这是一个可喜的"回升"。
