McCain Foods has confirmed a cleaning cloth was found in a bag of frozen chips in New Zealand earlier this month.
A supermarket checkout operator made the discovery after the package felt unusual. The contamination was reported to McCain Foods and has been traced back to the company's Ballarat operations.
A company spokesman says quality assurance controls at the factory have been reviewed.
McCain's is confident it was a one-off incident and there was no recall of the product.
