Kloosterboer and McCain are jointly building an automated future. In November 2008, the construction of one of the largest cold stores in France begun near Lille. After thorough preparation by McCain and Kloosterboer the first pile of the new cold store was sunk into the ground. The cold store will have 70,000 pallet spaces and will be located at McCain’s production site in Harnes. Kloosterboer will take care of the complete storage, handling and order picking of McCain’s products. The cold store will be operational by April 2010.

The site in Harnes is the second Automated high Cold Store project for Kloosterboer. The Automated Highbay Coldstore of Kloosterboer Delta Terminal (KDT) has been operational on the Maasvlakte near Rotterdam since October 2003. “We are really pleased with our co-operation for McCain, the largest potato product producer in the world. To be able to work specifically with McCain is a new chapter in the history of our company”, said Project Director Maarten Res.

By building of a central cold store, McCain bundles its stocks which used to be spread over different regional cold stores. This will lead to considerable reduction in transport costs. Next to direct economical advantages, this will add to a more sustainable distribution because of the possible reduction in CO2. Furthermore, for the construction of the Automated Highbay Cold Store, the most advanced building techniques available in this field will be applied. The costs for energy will therefore be 45% less in comparison to existing situations in conventional coldstores.

In the highbay zone, at 38 meter high, six fully automated cranes will be operated. This zone will be kept at minus 22o Celsius by a Cascade cooling system. An oxygen reduction system will be used which will also work as a fire prevention system. By using an automated guided vehicle system, production will be linked to the cold store.
