Klamath Basin Fresh Direct chooses packaging option to prevent greening

Klamath Basin Fresh Direct have found a way with their packaging, which is developed by Fox Packaging, to stop 99% of damaging light from reaching their potatoes. Potatoes are very sensitive to light and will turn green when they are exposed to light for too long.

The company chose to change their packaging type and use a bag equipped with Ultra-Shield technology proven to stop over 99% of the damaging light from reaching the potatoes. “We package each premium organic variety in convenient 1.5lb bags and also have a round Multicolor Medley bag and a Fingerling Medley bag as part of our product line”, explains Hollis Baley. “The front, sides, and bottom of the bag are made with the light-weight plastic Ultra-Shield material while the upper back side has a small mesh portion which gives the potatoes sufficient circulation allowing them to breathe.”

In choosing to utilize this new technology they also chose to re-design the presentation and have included artwork for each product available. Klamath Basin Fresh Direct is a cooperative of growers in the fertile Klamath Basin region of southern Oregon and Northern California growing and selling high-quality premium organic potatoes. This year they have 5 organic premium varieties available including Organic Purple Fiesta, which is a brand new variety.
