US potato industry confident it can gain back market share in Mexico

The U.S. potato industry is confident it can gain back the significant market share it lost in Mexico over a cross-border trucking dispute once the issue is resolved and remaining tariffs on U.S. products are lifted.

Having watched its revenue from frozen potato exports to Mexico cut in half as a result of retaliatory tariffs imposed by that country two years ago, the industry is at the forefront of efforts to ensure the dispute is resolved and the tariffs eliminated.

According to the National Potato Council, revenues from frozen potato exports to Mexico have dropped by more than $70 million a year, or nearly 50 percent, since the dispute began in March 2009.
