February is Potato Lovers Month: Northland Potato Growers Association highlights chip sector

The Northland Potato Growers Association (NPGA) represents potato growers across the Northland region, supporting production, promotion, and market development for the industry. During Potato Lover's Month, the association is recognizing the growers who contribute to the region’s four key sectors: Fresh, Processing, Chip, and Seed. Each week in February, one sector is featured. This week, the spotlight is on the chip sector.
Round white varieties grown for chipping have long been an essential part of the Northland production mix. Known for their quality and consistency, these potatoes are widely used in chip manufacturing and remain a consumer favorite. NPGA members ship chipping potatoes across the United States for snack production.
Whether kettle-cooked or thin-cut, baked or fried, salted or seasoned, chip potatoes from the region are used to create a wide range of flavors, including barbeque, sour cream & onion, cheddar, salt & vinegar, and classic plain.
The chip sector also supports well-known regional products such as the chocolate-covered potato chip treat "Chippers" from Widman's Candy Shop, as well as NPGA's "Treat 'em with Chips" Halloween promotion.
By highlighting the chip sector during Potato Lover's Month, the association recognizes the important role chip potato growers play in serving both regional partners and national snack markets.
