Utz Quality Foods, LLC, a subsidiary of Utz Brands, Inc., has announced a voluntary recall across the United States for limited varieties of Zapp’s® and Dirty® potato chips. The action comes after the company was informed that a seasoning ingredient containing dry milk powder may be potentially contaminated with Salmonella.

The ingredient was sourced from California Dairies, Inc. through a third-party supplier. Although the seasoning batches had tested negative for Salmonella before being used, the recall is being carried out as a precautionary measure to protect consumers from any possible risk.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

To date, there have been no complaints of illness reported to Utz in connection with the recalled products. Utz is recalling these products based on the ingredient supplier’s recall.

This recall is limited exclusively to the products listed below, which are available at retail stores nationwide. No other products produced by Utz Quality Foods are included in this recall.
