Descripción de la variedad

BRS F21, commercially known as “Braschips,” is a potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) cultivar developed by Embrapa for industrial processing, with a specific focus on potato chips and shoestring potatoes. The cultivar was developed over more than ten years by Embrapa’s Potato Breeding Program to meet the demands of both growers and the processing industry.

Agronomic Characteristics

  • Growth habit: Vigorous plants with good canopy development
  • Production cycle: Medium to slightly long
  • Yield potential: High, with stable performance across different environments
  • Adaptability: Well adapted to Brazil’s main potato-producing regions, including tropical and subtropical conditions
  • Physiological quality: Low incidence of internal defects such as internal spotting and cracking

Tuber Characteristics

  • Shape: Oval
  • Skin color: Light
  • Flesh color: Light yellow
  • Texture: Firm
  • Uniformity: High, favoring industrial slicing and processing efficiency

Processing and Quality Traits

  • Dry matter content: High, resulting in lower water content
  • Reducing sugars: Low, ensuring minimal caramelization during frying
  • Frying quality: Excellent, producing chips and shoestring potatoes with: Light and uniform color, high crispness and good oil absorption control
  • Industrial yield: High, contributing to reduced raw material costs for processors

Disease Resistance

  • Potato Virus Y (PVY): Resistant
  • Late blight: Good resistance
  • Black spot: Good resistance

Resistance to PVY is a major advantage, helping maintain plant vigor, yield stability, and seed quality over successive production cycles.
