Potato cultivation in Malta is widely practiced across the islands, with production concentrated in areas offering fertile soils and reliable irrigation access. According to the 2020 Census of Agriculture, the Western district accounts for the largest share of agricultural holdings (24.1%), followed by the Northern (20.8%) and Gozo and Comino districts (20.2%), while the Northern Harbour district has the lowest share (7.3%).
Potatoes are grown in both open fields and small family plots throughout Malta and Gozo, reflecting their significance in national agriculture. The country is especially renowned for its early spring potatoes—most notably the Alpha variety, characterized by its yellow flesh and exceptional culinary quality. This variety is highly prized in North European markets, particularly the Netherlands and Italy, for its flavor and freshness.
Malta’s favorable Mediterranean climate and early harvest season give its potatoes a strategic advantage in export markets. According to FAO statistics, Malta produced approximately 5,500 tonnes of potatoes in 2023.
