Fuel shortages linked to Strait of Hormuz disruptions force Yamayoshi Seika to halt Wasabeef chip production in Japan

三月 18, 2026

Japanese snack maker Yamayoshi Seika has suspended production of several potato chip products due to difficulties in securing fuel, impacting the availability of its well-known Wasabeef chips. The company confirmed it has halted production of six items, including its flagship wasabi and beef-flavored potato chips, as heavy oil required for manufacturing has become difficult to procure.

The disruption has been linked to developments in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route, where supply constraints have affected fuel availability.

Production halt and limited availability

Yamayoshi Seika has not announced a timeline for resuming production. In addition to stopping manufacturing, the company has temporarily closed its direct sales store and online shop, and is no longer accepting new orders. Existing orders will be fulfilled, while retail availability will be limited to current stock levels in supermarkets and other outlets.

Yamayoshi Seika:

"We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and trouble this will cause our customers and business partners."

The company stated that efforts are underway to secure fuel supplies and resume operations as soon as possible.

Impact of global oil supply disruption

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route for global crude oil shipments, has experienced disruptions, tightening fuel supply in international markets. For countries such as Japan, which rely heavily on energy imports, such disruptions can have broader effects across industries, including food manufacturing.

Yamayoshi Seika’s production halt highlights how supply chain challenges in energy markets can directly affect consumer goods availability. The sudden shortage of Wasabeef chips has also triggered reactions among consumers, with social media users expressing concern about potential shortages of other everyday products.
