Chip potato movement remains slow and steady as the industry transitions from storage potatoes to new-crop potatoes. Reports indicate that North Florida's potato crop is expected to be average or slightly better, while crop development in North Carolina is running 7-10 days ahead of schedule.
Potato crops in Missouri and Ohio were planted on time and are reported to be in good condition. Planting activities are also continuing in southern Michigan.
United States packers shipped 1.656 million cwt of table potatoes during the week ending May 2, 2026, compared to 1.582 million cwt shipped during the same week a year earlier. Michigan packers shipped 45,155 cwt during the week ending May 2, 2026, up from 39,880 cwt during the same week in 2025.
Reported Michigan shipments consisted of 64.8% Russets, 26.5% Round White potatoes and 8.7% Yellow potatoes.
Russet potato prices remain steady
USDA reported that Michigan packers are selling size A Russets in 10# bags for mostly USD 10.00-11.00 per 50# bale, unchanged from the previous week. Size A Russets in 5# bags are selling for mostly USD 11.00-12.00 per 50# bale, also unchanged.
Wisconsin packers are selling size A Russet potatoes in 10# bags for USD 7.00-7.50 per 50# bale, unchanged from last week. Russet 40-70 count cartons in Wisconsin are selling for mostly USD 10.00 per 50# box, also unchanged.
The weighted average shipping point price for Idaho Russet Norkotahs was USD 8.29 per cwt, down from USD 9.04 per cwt the previous week.
Yellow potato prices decline in Florida
USDA has stopped reporting Yellow potato prices for the Red River Valley. Florida packers are selling 50# cartons of size A Yellow potatoes for USD 23.00-29.95 per 50# box, down from USD 23.00-33.70 per 50# box a week earlier. Size A Yellow potatoes in 2000# tote bags are selling for USD 40.00-43.00 per cwt, unchanged from last week.
Florida packers are selling Yellow creamers for USD 35.95-41.00 per 50# carton, down from USD 38.00-41.00 per 50# carton a week ago.
