Phytophthora infestans, causing late blight in potatoes, has a virus accomplice
A research team has identified a virus infecting Phytophthora infestans, the pathogen causing late blight in potatoes and tomatoes, that appears to increase the pathogen's ability to cause the disease.

Disease resistant potato seeds launched in Dedza
In an effort to combat diseases which have been hampering potato yields for the past two years in Dedza, International Potato Centre (CIP) recently handed over disease resistant Irish potato seeds to ten farmers in the district.

Cornell University improves global access to potato breeding material
Plant breeders and geneticists of Cornell University have released more than 50 potato varieties since 1908. Now they are expanding their efforts to make more wild potato seeds available to potato breeders around the world.

Potato Blight Trends in Europe: EuroBlight 2018 Results
EuroBlight is continuously examining the ongoing evolution of the European population of the potato late blight pathogen and now reports on the 2018 results. Approximately 1000 samples were genotyped from 22 countries.
Potato tubers of one of the founder lines of Solynta. These parental plants could be the first self-compatible, diploid potato plants ever grown. Homozygous parents are needed for the creation of hybrids.

Agrico warns: 'Considerably less seed potatoes available for export'
During the annual potato variety show at Agrico the topic of discussion was not limited to unique varieties on display. The impact of the excessive heat and drought this season on the seed potato market was also a hot topic.
Agrico presented the potato varieties Twister and Twinner also at the Bio-beurs. Their natural resistance to the major potato disease Phytophthora makes them very suitable for organic cultivation.
