Hebei

Hebei is an important potato producing province in northern China, benefiting from its varied geography, temperate climate and proximity to major consumer markets including Beijing and Tianjin. Potato production occurs across several agro-ecological zones, from the northern and northwestern uplands to the central and eastern agricultural areas. The province is part of China's northern single cropping potato region as well as the broader central double cropping zone, giving growers opportunities for both spring and, in suitable areas, additional season production.

Northern Hebei, particularly the higher elevation areas of Zhangjiakou and Chengde, has developed a strong commercial potato sector. The cooler growing conditions in these areas are suitable for producing seed potatoes and table potatoes, while the province's transportation links provide access to large urban markets. Weichang County in Chengde has become one of Hebei's major potato production centres, with an established chain covering seed production, commercial cultivation, storage, processing and marketing. Recent provincial information reports about 750,000 mu of potatoes in Weichang, with annual production of approximately 1.65 million tonnes and storage capacity of 1.5 million tonnes.

Hebei's potato industry serves several market segments, including fresh consumption, seed potatoes and processing. Varieties such as Jizhangshu 12 are important in the province, particularly because of their relatively high dry matter and starch characteristics and their suitability for both fresh consumption and processing. Other varieties grown in the region include processing and fresh market types adapted to northern China's production conditions. The industry's development has increasingly focused on improved varieties, standardized cultivation, storage and processing rather than production of potatoes solely as a fresh vegetable.

Potatoes became established in parts of northern Hebei as farmers sought crops capable of producing food under relatively cool and sometimes dry conditions. In areas such as Weichang, potatoes eventually became an important food security crop because of their comparatively short growing period and ability to perform under conditions where other crops could be more difficult to produce. Local accounts describe potatoes as a traditional “lifesaving food” before the crop developed into a commercial agricultural industry.

The industry expanded significantly from the 1990s as improved varieties, cultivation techniques and commercial markets encouraged larger-scale production. Production gradually developed beyond field cultivation into a more integrated system involving virus-free seed potatoes, standardized planting, storage, processing and branding. Weichang subsequently became one of China's recognized potato production centres, with Jizhangshu 12 and other varieties supporting fresh and processing markets. Today, Hebei's potato sector is closely connected with domestic markets in northern and eastern China, while products from major production areas are also marketed outside the province.
