PEI potatoes headed for Argentina

September 17, 2007

After a long hiatus, Prince Edward Island is exporting potatoes to Argentina.

On Wednesday 5,000 tonnes of potatoes, the equivalent of 220 tractor-trailer loads, will be loaded on a boat in Summerside harbour. The shipment is the first in more than a decade.

Ivan Noonan, general manager of the P.E.I. Potato Board, said Friday the number of boats carrying potatoes south has dropped dramatically in recent years. This shipment is good news for Island growers, but comes because of bad news for farmers in Argentina. They faced "everything from too dry to too wet to disease problems."
