AgriCoat NatureSeal Ltd, a UK-based subsidiary of Mantrose Group, showcased its latest innovation at the Fruit Logistica exhibition in Berlin: NatureSeal PT1, a new sulphite-free anti-browning dip designed for peeled, sliced and diced potatoes.

The new solution protects potato colour, improves taste and offers a competitive cost-in-use for commercial applications. Sulphites have been widely used for years to prevent browning in fresh-cut potatoes, but they present several challenges, including labelling requirements, handling concerns and the risk of triggering allergic reactions.

NatureSeal PT1 was developed to provide a sulphite-free alternative that still delivers strong performance while fitting commercial production realities. The product helps maintain colour and quality in fresh-cut potatoes while avoiding the drawbacks associated with sulphite treatments.

According to the company, PT1 avoids the taint and metallic aftertastes sometimes linked with citric acid alternatives, delivering a clean taste after cooking. The product also performs reliably across common production and packaging formats, including open storage, fresh-packed and vacuum-packed potatoes.

Unpackaged potatoes can maintain colour for at least 48 hours, while vacuum-packed potatoes can maintain colour up to P+10 and remain stable for up to 24 hours after opening.

Unlike traditional antioxidant and acidulant blends that require high concentrations, PT1 works effectively at concentrations of 0.2–0.7% w/w, helping keep the cost-in-use competitive. The application process is simple: rinse off surface starch, dip the potatoes for 1–15 minutes and then drain. As a guideline, one litre of prepared solution can treat at least 10 kg of potatoes, depending on the variety and cut type.

NatureSeal PT1 is produced in the United Kingdom at AgriCoat NatureSeal BRC-accredited facility. The product is free from sulphites, allergens and GMOs and is suitable for vegan, halal and kosher diets.
