Quebec
Quebec is one of Canada’s major potato-producing provinces and ranks fifth nationally by production. Potato is the most widely cultivated vegetable crop in Quebec, with production distributed across several agricultural regions. In 2024, Quebec planted approximately 19,000 hectares of potatoes and produced about 666,300 tonnes, representing a strong recovery from the lower production recorded in 2023.
Potatoes are grown throughout Quebec, although production is concentrated in several important agricultural areas. The Capitale-Nationale and Chaudière-Appalaches area had the largest combined planted area in 2024, followed by Montréal–Laval–Lanaudière. Other important production areas include Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, Mauricie, Centre-du-Québec, Bas-Saint-Laurent and Côte-Nord. The province's cool climate and diverse agricultural soils support both table and seed potato production, while northern regions have an important role in seed production.
Quebec potatoes supply several markets, including fresh table potatoes, pre-peeled potatoes, processing and seed. More than half of the province's potato production is sold as fresh potatoes, while pre-peeled potatoes serve restaurants, hotels and institutional food services. Quebec growers cultivate more than 100 varieties, including Chieftain, Goldrush and Envol, a variety developed in Quebec. In 2024, Quebec produced 675,898 tonnes according to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's national potato statistics, placing it among Canada's leading potato producing provinces.
Potato cultivation in Quebec has a long agricultural history, although the industry developed substantially during the 19th and 20th centuries as potatoes became an important food and commercial crop. The development of organized production gradually connected growers with expanding urban markets and food distribution networks. By the 20th century, potatoes had become an established component of Quebec's commercial vegetable sector, with production taking place across several regions suited to the crop.
The modern Quebec potato industry has increasingly developed around specialized production, improved varieties, mechanization, seed production and organized marketing. Producer organization became more formalized in the mid-20th century; the first annual general meeting of the Association des Producteurs de pommes de terre du Québec was held in Montreal in February 1961. Since then, the industry has continued to develop across fresh, processing and seed markets. Recent production data show the continuing importance of potatoes to Quebec agriculture, with 666,300 tonnes harvested in 2024 and potato production distributed across much of the province.
